SharePoint Online – saving a modern page as a template

SharePoint Online allows you to save modern pages as templates. Once you have created and customised a page with webparts and content, you can save this as a template and create new pages from it! This means you don’t have to start from scratch and can bring some consistency to the look and feel of particular pages.

So how do you do it?

First, either create a new page that you want to become the template or navigate to an existing page.

There are 2 ways to save it as a template:

1. If you are in edit mode, click the “Save” drop-down menu and choose “Save as template”

2. Alternatively, click on “Promote” from the toolbar and choose “Save as page template”

Either of these options will create a new folder in your site pages library called “Templates”. This is where any page templates will be stored and where you can navigate to further customise your templates.

Just note that updating templates won’t affect any pages that have already been created from the template. It will only affect pages created from the template going forward.

Your template is now ready to be used by anyone! When you create a new page, you will now see your template is one of the options you can select.

NOTE: An alternative way to save an existing page as a template, is to simply navigate to your Site Pages library and copy your page into the “Templates” folder. Easy!
